Chapter Ten

Dottie turned to Cappy, “This explains a lot?”

“Indeed it does. I’ve wondered how the Warlord was able to maintain total control over the planets he’s conquered.”

Katelyn nodded, “Anyone in a position of leadership has that device put inside them. That includes the leaders on every planet along with every senior officer in the Kell forces. Anyone that shows any indication of being disloyal dies. Many who don’t exhibit disloyalty are killed just to keep the others aware of what’s hanging over them. Everyone in the Empire knows they are little more than slaves and their life hangs in the balance if they even think about breaking those chains. And they can’t run. Those devices can be activated over incredible distances.”

“And you have all the frequencies of everyone in the Kell Empire that have those devices in them?” Gemini asked.

“Yes, I do.”

“How did you manage to do that?” Cappy asked. “Certainly, the Warlord would have protections preventing that information from being taken?”

Katelyn shrugged, “I told you that I don’t forget what I see. That information was in my communications console after I was promoted to Communications Director. I’d send out the orders to kill someone who displeased him. I memorized the list and at night I would copy them down into a data collector.”

“You would have died if he found out,” Jumelle remarked.

“The data was hidden such that he’d never find it.”

The computer entered the conversation, “The Kell Empire is structured like an inverted pyramid.”

“I’m not sure what you mean by that,” Dottie replied.

“Picture a pyramid with the wide base above the top point. The pyramid is balanced on that point. The Warlord represents that point and if he is removed, the pyramid will topple.”

“So, take out the Warlord and it all falls apart,” Jumelle commented.

“Exactly.”

“You could always use this information on the devices and remove everyone in the Empire’s leadership starting with their military commanders,” Gemini suggested.

Katelyn turned to him, “You should remember that many of them are being forced to carry out the Warlord’s orders. They are like what my husband became.”

“The Kell wouldn’t hesitate to take them out,” Gemini countered.

“And that’s why we’ll never do it,” Cappy replied. “We aren’t and never will allow ourselves to be like them.”

Gemini shrugged, “Then that only leaves taking out the Warlord.”

Cappy nodded and Katelyn said, “That isn’t as easy as you might think.”

“We’ll just have to find a way to get close to his location,” Dottie interjected.

“That’s not what I mean,” Katelyn replied. “I don’t believe the man who is calling himself the Warlord is the real Warlord.” Everyone turned to her and she saw their shocked expressions. “That man is a figurehead and someone else holds the real power in the Empire.”

“Why do you believe that?” the computer asked.

“On several occasions when something serious was happening, the Warlord would go to his office and activate his communicator; my station showed it was in use. When you came and destroyed the five warships and took the monuments, he immediately went to his office and spoke to someone.
